Chai tea , also known as masala chai , is much more than a comforting beverage. This traditional Indian infusion combines black tea with a blend of aromatic spices that not only provide flavor but also multiple health benefits. Today, we explore the properties of chai tea , the benefits of its key ingredients, its role in Ayurvedic medicine, and how to prepare it.
What are the benefits of chai?
Chai, as we know it today, is an ancient combination of medicinal and aromatic plants . In its traditional form, masala chai is made with spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom, black pepper, and black tea. These spices, in addition to providing a distinctive flavor, have anti-inflammatory , digestive , antioxidant , and stimulating effects .
Cinnamon
Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It helps regulate blood sugar and improves circulation. It also has antimicrobial properties.
Ginger
A powerful digestive aid, it's ideal for relieving nausea, bloating, and stomach upset. In Ayurveda, it's used to warm the body and stimulate the immune system.
Cardamom
Known as the "queen of spices," it aids digestion, freshens breath, and has a balancing effect on the nervous system.
Nail
Antibacterial, antifungal, and natural analgesic. It is very effective against oral infections and digestive pain.
Black pepper
It improves nutrient absorption, especially that of turmeric. It stimulates metabolism and has a slightly spicy effect that activates digestion.
In short, chai tea: aids digestion, strengthens the immune system, is anti-inflammatory, stimulates circulation, has an antioxidant effect, provides internal warmth and natural energy.
Black tea or rooibos: which base should you choose?
Assam black tea : traditionally used in India. Rich in caffeine and antioxidants. Stimulates the nervous system and improves alertness. It has body and character, ideal for those looking for an energizing chai.
Rooibos : A caffeine-free alternative, ideal for sensitive individuals or for evening use. Its naturally sweet flavor pairs well with spices. It's also rich in antioxidants and tannin-free, so it's not bitter.
Chai in Ayurvedic medicine
In Ayurvedic medicine, chai is not just a beverage, but a balancing remedy . Each spice is chosen for its ability to target the doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha) and keep the body in harmony. For example, ginger and cinnamon warm, which helps people with internal cold (vata); cardamom and clove calm excess heat (pitta); and black pepper stimulates those with slow digestion (kapha).
Traditional masala chai has been consumed for centuries, especially in winter or during bouts of colds, thanks to its digestive and immune-boosting properties. However, there are also delicious ways to enjoy it during the warmer months, such as cold brew chai , a refreshing version that retains all the benefits of its spices.
